The upcoming 3rd International Congress on Stratigraphy STRATI 2019, which will be held in Milano 2-5 July, 2019, proposes a session on the Paleogene in Scientific Theme T3, “Erathemes, Systems, Series and Stages”. From the STRATI 2019 webpage:
ST3.9 Paleogene stratigraphy, timescales and global change
Convener: Simonetta Monechi simonetta.monechi@unifi.it
Co-Conveners: Laia Alegret, Aitor Payros
The Paleogene is a period of significant changes in Earth´s climate and biota, as it witnessed global events from an asteroid impact, to significant climate changes such as a warming trend towards the early Eocene, and cooling with growth of a continental-scale Antarctic ice sheet towards the Oligocene. The warm greenhouse climate of the Paleocene and Eocene was punctuated by a series of short-lived warming events called hyperthermals. These events triggered major changes in the biota and in the stratigraphic expression of the Paleogene. The International Subcommission on Paleogene Stratigraphy has put much effort on the definition of the GSSPs of the Paleogene, and contributions dealing with both the already defined and the still missing Paleogene GSSPs are welcome. These include studies of integrated biostratigraphy, magnetochronostratigraphy and correlation with classical areas and ocean drilling sites, among others. In the search for an improved understanding of Paleogene evolution, the session is open to contributions that deal with any aspect of the Paleogene.
